Robert Frost's National Junior Society Gathers Goods for Food Drive

The National Junior Honor Society at Robert Frost recently held a Thanksgiving food drive for families in the community, guided by adviser Seth Margolin. Every morning, students from the NJHS led a buildingwide collection of canned goods and nonperishable foods. After collecting for two weeks, NJHS members were able to fill dozens of baskets with Thanksgiving food for the families in need.

Patriotic Displays in Deer Park Schools Give Thanks to Veterans

In honor of Veterans Day, students in both social studies and family and consumer science classes at Deer Park High School and Robert Frost created heartfelt thank you messages for military veterans on red, white and blue cards. Many students gave personal thanks to friends and family members who have served. The cards were then put on display in cases in the lobbies of both schools. The high school's display was assisted by members of the Patriot Club.

"We often take for granted the freedoms and protections we have as United States citizens," said Vanessa Langdon, Deer Park's curriculum associate for secondary social studies and FACS. "Veterans Day reminds us to reflect on the sacrifices that have been made, and continue to be made, to ensure our liberty."

Celebrating South Asian Culture at Robert Frost

The Deer Park School District's ELA Department will be celebrating the different cultures of its students and families with an ongoing Cultural Celebration series throughout the year. ELA classes at Robert Frost kicked off the first event in the series on Nov. 5, focusing on the experiences of American teen voices from South Asian backgrounds. Middle school sudents and teachers read texts of South Asian authors and discussed how those experiences relate to common experiences shared by many families and young people.

"Students were able to make connections between the celebration of Diwali and their own holidays, which led to meaningful and fun discussions," English teacher Carla DeVito said.

Deer Park's Students Present Tribute for School Board Recognition Week

The Deer Park Board of Education was honored for School Board Recognition Week during the rescheduled October meeting, held on Nov. 2. Organized by Assistant Superintendent for Pupil Personnel Services Alicia Konecny and District Administrator of Instructional Technology Jay Murphy, EdTech student presenters from each building offering biographical tributes to each individual board member.

Deer Park High School student Katia Papillar presented on President Donna Marie Elliott, May Moore Primary School student Isabella LaGonterie presented on Vice President Kristine Rosales, John F. Kennedy Intermediate School student Avery Freda presented on trustee Al Centamore, JFK student Brandon Jones presented on trustee Al Centamore, high school student Mohammad Fahad presented on trustee Anthony Henkel, Robert Frost Middle School student Jaidyn Schabe presented on trustee Jerry Jean-Pierre, middle school student Eve Valentine presented on trustee Robert Marino and JFK student De'Shaun McClean presented on District Clerk Lisa Brennan.

Assisting in the presentation were EdTech mentors Marcella Biordi, Kimberly Essig, Thomas Fitzmaurice, Dana Grafstein, Carey Okurowski, Lori Palopoli, Jamie Pambianchi, Natalie Sabia, Ashley Varney and Olivia Vilardi Perez, as well as tech coaches Christine Joneleit and Jennifer Paduano.

"It's tough to be a board member right now, and it's an unpaid position," Superintendent James Cummings said. "They volunteer their time to try and do what's best for the kids. And this district is in a good financial position for years to come thanks to this board of ed. The people on this board are graduates of Deer Park, they are parents and grandparents of graduates and students of Deer Park. They're our community members. So, every year, we spend a few minutes to honor them. I appreciate the time they put in for the students and parents of this community."

In staff recognitions, the Board thanked May Moore Primary School teaching assistant Barbara Goemans for saving a choking student in the cafeteria.

"Barbara didn't even think twice, she knew exactly what to do, and that's part of what makes Deer Park such a great community," Cummings said. "She saved a life."

Additionally, John F. Kennedy Intermediate School fourth grader Christopher Valencia was recognized for being an honoree in the Town of Babylon's 23rd annual Hispanic Heritage Festival.

"We have so many great kids and staff members here, and it's important in a school district that we honor some of the great things they do that maybe don't get recognized," Cummings said.
